Weekend update

Over the weekend I have been reading and making notes from the book Photographing Flowers by Sue Bishop

After reading through the notes and the book I was highly influenced by photographs that were taken for artistic purposes, rather than to just show the flower. I liked how she concentrated on one part of the flower that stood out to her. I found that this can be called differential focus, which gives a more artistic interpretation of a flower as it was focused on a small part, using a large aperture.

I also took note of the colour wheel, which we have learnt about in class before now, and reading it in the book reminded me of it's purposes.
Colours adjacent are harmonious
Colours opposite contrast
When taking photographs, watch out for dominant colours, and make sure to use them effectively. This would work well if you were to photograph a red flower on a green background, as they contrast, and the flower jumps out as red is a dominant colour. This wouldn't work if it was reversed.

I tried some of the techniques I have written notes about for myself.

I have taken these photographs keeping in mind -
  • Awareness of the time of day/position of the sun to where I was stood
  • Awareness of the use of flash
  • Depth of field
  • Differential focus
  • The colour wheel
  • Composition
After reading  the book and seeing Sue Bishops photography, I've realised that I don't need to go outside to take photographs of flowers, I can buy them from the florist and take them inside, to light them differently, and use techniques that she uses, such as using tin foil as a reflector. I will definitely be trying this at some point.
I also need to borrow different lenses, such as a 200mm as it can zoom in to the flowers detail much further.
