Mario Testino

My tutors suggested Testino in my feedback after my pitch, looking through his photography and video advertisements, I can see that he always makes everything beautiful. He shoots in beautiful locations and chooses his shots carefully, to focus on the product being advertised. In his video advertisements, a lot of the shots are close up, and some of them use slow motion - which is something I want to use in my video.

Advertisements such as Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue II, D&G Fragrance Anthology, use many of the same things, such as white clothing and the use of black and white, which is typical of D&G and makes the brand recognisable.

A lot of his older work, featured in his book of photography Any Objections published in 1999, is very raunchy and risqué, but every image has a story behind it, or a meaning.

"If a fashion photographer is one who registers the spirit of the moment, Mario Testino is the photographer of the moment. Fashion photography, which revels in beautiful surfaces, which positively declares its superficiality, has an uncanny way of piercing in the heat of the moment to the heart of the moment. And this is the challenge of Testino’s first book, Any Objections? In it he discloses an unfamiliar and yet essential aspect of his work, which nevertheless lies at its centre.
Testino’s fashion photographs are highly polished. Even the deceptive nonchalance of his memorable images for Gucci was only achieved by the most strenuous efforts on his part and that of his visual collaborators. But such resultant cool is the tip of an iceberg crystallized from wildly diverse sources. This book declares his raw material, the visual grist to his mill, unrefined and therefore, pure"

His images make you want to be in the place they're taken.

What I have taken from looking at his work
    • Create recognisable images/videos
    • Make sure my images have a meaning, perhaps describe this meaning through the use of my website
    • Create images that, like his, would make the viewer want to be there
    • Make it obvious what the advertisement it selling
